The Bathukamma Sarees Scheme is a popular Telangana state initiative where the government distributes free sarees to women — particularly BPL and ration card holder women — during the Bathukamma festival (the 9-day floral festival of Telangana women, celebrated in September-October). Launched by the BRS government and continued by the Congress government, the scheme distributes high-quality sarees (typically handloom/Pochampally/Gadwal weave sarees worth ₹500-1,000) to crores of women. Distribution point: Ration shops (PDS shops) and designated collection centres across Telangana. Scale: Over 1.5 crore women beneficiaries annually. The scheme also supports Telangana's handloom weaver community — the government bulk-purchases sarees from TSCO (Telangana State Cooperative Textiles Federation) and district-level weaver cooperatives, providing livelihood to over 1 lakh weavers.
