Bhagya Jyothi and Kuteera Jyothi are Karnataka government's electricity subsidy schemes providing FREE units of electricity per month to economically weaker families. Bhagya Jyothi: For BPL (Below Poverty Line) households with a single-phase connection — first 40 units per month FREE (if consumption ≤ 40 units, the bill is zero). Kuteera Jyothi: For AAY (Antyodaya Anna Yojana) / Destitute families — first 40 units FREE with higher coverage. Under the expanded Gruha Jyothi scheme (2023), all domestic consumers of Karnataka get 200 units free per month — effectively superseding and expanding beyond Bhagya Jyothi. However, Bhagya Jyothi/Kuteera Jyothi continue for specific BPL/AAY categories and small huts/kutcha houses. Beneficiaries: 1.5 crore+ households in Karnataka. Apply through BESCOM/MESCOM/GESCOM/HESCOM/CESC distribution companies or electricity seva kendras.
